Eyes Wide Shut

Ran across this quote and picture:
El sueño de la razón produce monstruos.
~Francisco de Goya, Los Caprichos, 1799
"The sleep of reason produces monsters."
reminds me of my longtime favorite quote:
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing it,
doesn't go away."
~Philip K. Dick
You know how little kids will cover their eyes and think you can't see them? Is this where I am? Covering my eyes to hide from something - to try to make it go away? Or am I having faith that love will conquer all?
Cate writes:
"I still don't really believe that he isn't gay, but I do believe that his love for me might be stronger than any gay tendencies he has."
(sigh)

Reality doesn't go away. But I have discovered that my perception of reality can change so drastically that reality might just as well have changed. Sometimes I think we make a mistake by projecting today's reality into the future - where it is,in fact, not real. The danger is when we act on that.

I believe my love for my wife combined with my desire to be the kind of person I want to be are stronger than my gay tendencies. Maybe not at every single moment. But that's what I am working on. And I am trying to minimize the damage that struggle has on my wife. Sometimes I wish she could help me in the struggle, but it's not fair to her to ask her to do that. But I'm pretty sure she's pulling for me.

Last week during a session in some service work in which I am lucky enough to participate, someone reminded me that love is not just a feeling, love is action. That was a great thing for me to hear and very relevant to the current state of my relationship with my wife. I need to take more action.

I hope this makes a little sense. Bea et al, as always, thanks for sharing your perspective. I find it extremely helpful.

We make reality what it is. Especially in relationships. Sometimes I feel pressure to acquiesce to someone else's fatalistic views of "reality".

Nuh uh.

Someone else said:

Reality is what we can all agree on.

That keeps it pretty narrow... just ask Ann Coulter or Al Franken.
